The first Quick Start Guide (QSG) in this series of webinars will introduce local authority officers to the air pollution. It will start with an overview of key air pollutants in the UK as well as outlining terminology that is used to describe pollution in an air quality policy context. It then looks at the distribution of key air pollutants over the UK and looks at the socioeconomic impacts of pollution and finishes with what current methods are being implemented to reduce poor air quality.

The second QSG builds on knowledge learned in the first QSG by introducing national air quality regulations such as the Air Quality Framework Directive, Air Quality Standards Regulations 2010, Air Quality Action plan for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) (2017) and more. They describe the basic principles as to how air quality should be assessed and managed. The QSG continues to introduce specific legislation for local authorities such as the Local Air Quality Management Framework underpinned by the Environment Act 1995.

This webinar focuses on two often overlooked sources of air pollution: domestic burning and agriculture. Local Authorities are increasingly expected to help reduce emissions from these areas, and this session will explain the main sources of pollution and suggest ways to manage them - such as using Smoke Control Areas and running public awareness campaigns. The webinar will also include examples from recent government guidance, like the Code of Good Agricultural Practice (COGAP) and the Air Quality Strategy for Local Authorities, as well as case studies showing where action has worked well.
