This module will introduce some practical aspects of noise reporting and evaluation and also serve as a quick review of the key aspects of the previous 4 modules, drawing together the materials provided in other modules to evaluate noise reports and understand how conditions and notices should be drafted.  The module will be based on review of a number of case study examples.  The examples will be provided and delegates will have the opportunity to work through the examples with the guidance of trainers.  The focus of the day will be to arrive at reasoned, evidenced, technically and legally sustainable conclusion.

This module marks the commencement of the Essentials of Noise programme.  The module will deal with the basics of sound propagation, calculations, monitoring and evaluation.  This module will provide the basis for understanding and assimilation of the more technically complex aspects of regulation and enforcement of noise.  The module is designed to practical and pragmatic.  The focus will be on what regulators need to know to properly evaluate submitted reports and place them into context.

This advanced session will focus on case studies that use a variety of acoustic standards to demonstrate environmental impact.  The session will provide a review of how BS4142, and WHO criteria are used in practice to demonstrate environmental impact.  The session will provide a number of case studies for (hopefully) in person review and critical analysis.

The session will provide opportunity to revisit the concept of uncertainty in noise measurement and reporting and how that might affect decision making.

The course will review the principle guidance on noise impact assessment and sustainability, and place this is the context of securing planning policy, and implementation, it will provide a review of the guidance for noise and ventilation requirements as well as some case study examples of good environmental design.  This session will include a review of ‘green technologies’ ground and air source heat, designing for efficiency and provide insight into the knotty problem of ventilation in homes.
