Land contamination is a material consideration under planning. Under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 local authorities also have a legal duty to inspect their area for the purpose of identifying and dealing with statutory Contaminated
    Land. The management of land contamination begins with an appreciation of the relevant legal context and formulating a robust conceptual site model (CSM), which summarises the relevant source-pathway-receptor linkages.
This course will provide an insight into the relevant legislation and explains how the CSM is central to the risk assessment process.  It highlights the sources of uncertainties associated with land contamination and the importance of accounting
    for these within the risk management process. It will also outline the phased approach to land contamination management recommended in CLR11 and BS10175 and explore the requirements of the first step of this approach – the Phase 1 assessment or Preliminary
    investigation
By the end of the webinar delegates should:
    - Better understand what the planning and Part 2A regimes do and say;
- Understand the value of the phased approach to land contamination assessment;
- Know the basic requirements of a Phase 1 desk study and walkover survey;
- Understand how this information is combined into a CSM;
- Have generated their own CSM from simple desk study information; and
- Be better able to review Phase 1 reports.
The course stands alone but can be also undertaken as one module of the Essentials of Contaminated Land Management series - a structured programme of training leading to the Certificate in Contaminated Land.
The course will be presented by experienced trainers in short sections interspersed with interactive content, activities and practical exercises.
