The investigation of potentially contaminated land commences with a preliminary investigation including a desk study of documentary evidence, a site reconnaissance (walkover survey) and interviews with key individuals familiar with a site’s past.
This allows an initial conceptual site model (CSM) to be developed. Resolving the significant uncertainties in this CSM forms the objectives of the intrusive site investigation whose findings will inform a quantitative risk assessment.
This course explores how the initial CSM should be used to set suitable objectives for a site investigation and then to develop an appropriate sampling and analytical strategy, which should ensure that an appropriate quantity and quality of data is collected to support a subsequent risk assessment. It will explain the different site investigation and laboratory analysis techniques commonly used in the UK and how this data should, and should not, be analysed and presented within reports.
By the end of the course delegates should:
- Understand how the site investigation objectives and design should be anchored to the CSM;
- Recognise the common methods of intrusive investigation and some of the more innovative techniques;
- Be able to derive an appropriate sampling strategy;
- Know the basic field and laboratory analysis used to determine contaminant concentrations and associated parameters in environmental samples;
- Realise the importance of appropriate presentation of the data; and
- Be better able to critique any application of statistical analysis to such data.
The course stands alone but can be also undertaken as one module of the Essentials of Contaminated Land Management series - a structured programme of training leading to the Certificate in Contaminated Land accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).
