EMAQ+ are able to offer the recorded sessions from Ricardo’s openair essentials online training course consisting of six 2-hour training sessions were delivered over three days via live web conferencing in November 2025. The interactive online sessions, conducted by expert trainers, thoroughly explore the fundamentals of R and openair. In addition, attendees will be introduced to cutting-edge developments in the field, including the interactive mapping of air quality directional analysis and advanced techniques for removing weather variation in air quality data (“meteorological normalisation”).
This comprehensive and interactive course provides a solid foundation for new users to develop new and existing skills further. At the same time, the course also offers valuable insights and updates for experienced users, providing a useful refresher of openair and R as well as exposure to the latest analytical methods and best techniques to yield greater insights and improve technical knowledge. The course is suited to anyone working with air quality data, whether UK-based or internationally.
Openair & R training explained...
R is a freely available programming language, designed from the ground-up to make working with data easier and more reproducible. The language is widely used in the public and private sectors, in industries as wide ranging as financial services, healthcare, research, consultancy, journalism, and more. Data analysts and scientists in major companies like Google, Airbnb and Meta all use R to help gain extra insight from their data.
"openair" is a package written in R, designed specifically for the analysis of air quality data. It is used worldwide by air quality practitioners in academia, government and industry to learn more about their long-term measurement data. Functionality includes the ability to examine and visualise air quality time series and trends, as well as perform "directional analysis" to understand potential pollution sources. openair also provides easy access to air quality data in the UK from nationally and locally managed air quality networks.
