In order to make decisions regarding the need, or otherwise, for remediation a suitable robust assessment of the potential risks must be conducted. This estimation and evaluation of risk are key components of the risk assessment process that underpins the planning and redevelopment regimes and the Part 2A regime.
This course, which focuses mainly on human health risk assessment, will outline current UK guidance relating to human health (HHRA) and controlled waters risk assessments (CWRA), and then explore the technical complexity of HHRA in more detail. It will summarise the importance of toxicology, explain the different Generic Assessment Criteria (GAC) commonly used in the UK (including the SGVs, the C4SLs and LQM/CIEH S4ULs) and outline the UK CLEA model, which is generally used to undertake detailed quantitative risk assessments (DQRA).
By the end of the course delegates should:
- Understand the key concepts and guidance that underpin any HHRA and CWRA;
- Be confident in using the technical terminology and many abbreviations (eg TDI, LLTC, ADE and MDI) encountered in most HHRA reports;
- Recognise the differences between the various published GAC;
- Be aware that where GAC are exceeded an appropriate DQRA may still demonstrate that remediation is unnecessary;
- Appreciate the importance of uncertainty in any risk assessment; and
- Be familiar the CLEA model and recognize its output reports.
The course stands alone but can be also undertaken as one module of the Essentials of Contaminated Land Management series - a structured programme of training leading to the Certificate in Contaminated Land accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).
The course will be presented by experienced trainers in short sections interspersed with interactive content, activities and practical exercises.
