  • Session 1: Understanding of the Air Quality Issues

    An understanding of the pollutants involved and the effects to be managed:

    • Particles (PM10 & PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide, ozone, sulphurdioxide, PAH, benzene, 1,3 butadiene, carbon monoxide,lead, and ammonia.
    • The impacts of air pollutants on human health, thedegradation of terrestrial and aquatic environments as aresult of acidification, eutrophication, photochemicalpollution and ozone formation, and damage to materials.
    • The role of air pollutants and climate change.
    • Session 2: Legislation and Statutory Guidance

      Awareness of where/how LAQM fits into the UK framework for environmental protection

      • The EU AQ Directive - Council Directive on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe (2008/50/EC)
      • The Environment Act 1995
      • AQ Strategy (AQ Standards & Objectives)
      • Statutory guidance
      • How AQM fits in with the UKs larger framework for environmental protection: clean air, PPC, development control, health, transport, and climate change.
      • Session 3: Local Air Quality Management Roles & Responsibilities

        An understanding of the roles and responsibilities:

        • DAs: Scotland; Wales; N Ireland
        • English LAs
          • Lower tier with responsibility for LAQM and planning
          • Upper tier with responsibility for transport
        • Session 4: Review and Assessment

          An introduction to the fundamentals of

          • Review and Assessment
          • Action planning and the effective control of emissions
          • Session 5: Technical Guidance

            Awareness of the sources and content of the technical advice issued by:

            • Defra and DAs
            • IAQM/EPUK
            • Helpdesks
            • UK-AIR
            • Session 6: Reporting

              • Knowledge of the reporting required (and how to submit them) for:
                • Updating and Screening Assessments (not England)
                • Detailed Assessments
                • Action Planning
                • Annual Status/Progress Reporting
              • Essentials of LAQM 1 Knowledge Check, Feedback and CPD

                The LAQM 1 Knowledge Check will enable you to review your understanding of the course material from the 6 sessions across LAQM 1.

                Participants will have three attempts at the Knowledge Check and a score of 75% is required to pass.
