The World Health Organisation has set challenging updated
air quality guidelines. Meanwhile, Defra have published two new air quality
targets (standards) to be met for PM2.5 in England. In
addition, legal national emission reduction targets set for the UK for PM2.5
for 2030 are not expected to be met under currently adopted policies and
measures. The Government has consulted on further policies and measures to
achieve this target in their revised National Air Pollution Control Programme
published in February 2023. The role of Local Authorities in achieving reduced
PM2.5 emissions and concentrations is outlined in the Environmental
Improvement Plan (January, 2023) but there is a commitment to elaborate on this
in the forthcoming updated Air Quality Strategy due to be published by
Government in May 2023. This seminar will set out the expectations for Local Authorities to
improve air quality across their functions. This will cover the role of
Local Authorities to implement, enforce and monitor action at the local level.
The opportunities and challenges to embed Defra guidance into local action will
be discussed with practitioners.
