UK planning law places a requirement on Local Authorities to design and publish local plans based upon conceptual requirements set out in The National Planning Policy Framework. Included within these requirements are for local authorities to:
“preventing new and existing development from contributing to, being put at unacceptable risk from, or being adversely affected by, unacceptable levels of soil, air, water or noise pollution or land instability. Development should, wherever possible, help to improve local environmental conditions such as air and water quality, taking into account relevant information such as river basin management plans;”
Additionally, local authorities are also required by the Environment Act (1995 (updated 2022)) to regularly review and assess the quality of its air with the goal of achieving the standard for concentrations of air pollutants set out in the Air Quality Standards Regulation (2010).
This one-day course is designed to support Local Authorities in achieving both these requirements. Through a series of short seminars, attendees will be provided clear information of statutory requirements and best practices in developing a framework for the submission and review of an air quality impact assessment (AQIA). The course will be delivered by an experienced air quality practitioner who will provide an overview of techniques used by practitioners to assess the impacts to local air quality by a proposed development/change in land use, helping attendees to better understand the information contained with an AQIA and achieve the goals set through UK planning and environmental regulations.
