The purpose of this module is to introduce delegates to industrial process emissions, describe their nature and explain the various pollution control techniques that are available for each type of pollutant. The course aims to ensure that delegates can accurately identify the likely pollutants to be considered by a Pollution Prevention and Control permit for those industrial processes falling under Local Authority control, including Part A(2) permits subject to the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control regime. The intention is to provide delegates with an overview of common industrial pollutants affecting air, land, and water, together with their (common) control mechanisms. Also covered will be noise, odour, waste minimisation, resource efficiency and energy efficiency, explaining where these ‘pollutants’ figure within the permitting process. A number of tools for assisting in identifying, quantifying and assessing likely pollutant releases to the environment will be discussed, together with how to assess the acceptability of proposed control and dispersion of pollutants through Chimney Height calculations and dispersion modelling techniques.
This module stands alone but can be also undertaken as Module 3 of the EMAQ+ ‘Essentials of PPC’ course - a structured programme of training leading to the Certificate in Pollution Prevention and Control.
On completion of this module, delegates will have a better understanding of:
- The nature of emissions from industrial processes to air, water and land
- Practical examples of means for their control
- An understanding of noise, odour, energy and waste minimisation
- The tools available to determine a suitable level of control for emissions and discharges to the environment from a permitted activity
- Specific methods of the control of noise and odour through permit conditions
- What factors to consider when considering dispersion via stacks, noise assessments, water and waste audits at permitted activities
IMPORTANT INFORMATON: To undertake the Essential of PPC course, you must nominate a Supervising Officer from your Local Authority. Your nominated Supervisor should be a responsible line manager or mentor who has an interest in your training development programme and they will be required to verify you have undertaken the course under appropriate conditions, as part of your training and development programme.
